John J. Phelan, Jr. M.D.

Guilderland-Dr. John J. Phelan Jr, 84, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 surrounded by his children following a long illness. Dr. Phelan was born in Albany, NY on September 7, 1927, the son of the late Dr. John and Ruth Carrigan Phelan. He was a graduate of Vincentian Institute, Holy Cross College and Albany Medical College. He began private practice in 1958 and was the Chief of Surgery at St. Peter’s Hospital until his retirement in 1998. He was a past president of The Medical Society of the County of Albany. He was past president and a member of Albany County Club for over fifty years. He was also a Communicant of Christ the King Church, Westmere. One of his most cherished honors was being named Physician of the Year in 1991. Dr. Phelan was predeceased by his loving wife, Jean Totman Phelan in 1998 and is survived by his six children Patricia (Kevin) Broderick of Guilderland, Mary (Judd) Staley of Niskayuna, John (Robin) Phelan of Guilderland, Eileen (Peter) Rings of Scotia, Ward (Jean Hunter) Phelan of Michigan, and Brian (Kimberleigh) Phelan of Guilderland. He was blessed with thirteen grandchildren, Casey and Margaret Broderick, Judd (Sharon), Christopher, and Laura Staley, John IV, Kelsie, Katherine and Benjamin Phelan, Zachary White, Michael Rings, Zoe Elwell and Ava Phelan. He is also survived by his sister Anne (John) Ryan, his brothers David (Jeanette) Phelan and Peter Phelan along with many nieces and nephews. Dr. Phelan was predeceased by his brothers Robert Phelan, Richard Phelan and his sisters Ruth Phelan, Joan (Davis) Tarr, and Rosemary Phelan. He was especially delighted in becoming a great grandfather earlier this year with the birth of Henry Ellis Staley. Funeral services Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 10:15 am from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany thence to Christ the King Church, Westmere at 11:00 am where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Monday, June 4, 2012 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the funeral home. The parish family of Christ the King Church will gather Monday at 4:30 pm at the funeral home for a service of prayer and remembrance. All are welcome. Interment St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
