Edith J. Papa

Albany, NY-It is with great sadness that the family of Edith J. Papa announces her passing from a brief illness at the age of 99 in the comfort of her home with her two sons (her guardian angels) at her side. She has now been reunited with her husband of 55 years, Joseph A. Papa. Edith will be missed mostly by her most loving sons Salvatore (Sam) and Joseph, Jr. (her Jojo/Yoyo), who treated her like a queen. She will also be missed by her brother Robert Alvaro and sister-in-law Marie (Midge) Alvaro; nieces and nephews, Jane (Tony) Luiso, Alfred (Theresa) Alvaro, Ann-Margret (Joe) Foley, Michael Alvaro, Joan (William) McMullen, Ricky (Tamara) Alvaro, Patricia Alvaro, Robert (Sheila) Alvaro, John Alvaro, Christopher Alvaro, and Julie (Jerry) Price. Edith was the daughter of Italian (Calabrian) immigrant parents Domenick and Angelina (Salerno) Alvaro. Before Americanizing her name, she was born as Ida Immacolata. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, Alfred “Bocky” and sister-in-law Catherine Alvaro, Michael and sister-in-law Shirley Alvaro, Pearl and brother-in-law Danny LaRoina, and Michaelangelo Alvaro (infant). Edith will be fondly remembered by her family and large circle of friends. Kay Alvaro (deceased) was her lifelong best friend and sister-in-law with whom she spoke on the phone hours each day. Nieces Janey and Margie were like her daughters. Her special great niece and nephew were Gianna Foley and Joseph Foley. Her best friends were sister-in-law Midge Alvaro, Dorothy Halloran, Edith Sleasman, Mary Ellen Sochor, Dorothy Connolly (deceased), Bridie Coy (deceased) Anne Egan (deceased). Edith was born and raised in Albany, NY. She graduated from Cathedral High School at 15 years old, received her working papers and went on to work for National Commercial Bank (Key Bank) for over 28 years. She worked her way up to head teller. In between working, she took a break to help her family and raise her sons. Edith was a member of the Key Bank Quarter Century Club, the American Institute of Banking, and a life time member of the Ladies of Charity. Edith loved to read and cherished meeting one of her favorite authors, David Baldacci. Edith enjoyed trips to Kennebunkport Maine and to the local casinos. She loved traveling three times to Italy. Edith often spoke about trips to Florida with her parents and family. In her younger years, she was a big Frank Sinatra fan and often traveled to NYC to see him. Edith was a woman of great faith. She was a devout Catholic all of her life and looked forward to attending Saturday afternoon mass each week. For many years, she volunteered as a weekly money counter and Eucharistic Minister at St. Catherine of Siena (Mater Christi) church. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Edith’s family Wednesday, April 15, 2026 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell Street (Rev. Kenneth J. Doyle Way), Albany, NY 12208. Her Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 am. The Rite of Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont, NY immediately following the Mass.
