Marion Louise Doody

Albany-Marion Doody died peacefully on February 14, 2021 at the Eddy Village Green in Cohoes, NY. Marion Louise (Horn) Doody was born March 31, 1931 in Big Flats, NY, to Herbert S. and Augusta King Horn, the youngest daughter, and last surviving sibling, of four children. She had two sisters, Blanche (Francis) Nelson and Inez (Charles) Tristram, and a brother, Herbert (Theresa) Horn. She grew up in Pawling, NY. Marion graduated from Pawling High School in 1947, at age 16, earning a College Entrance Diploma. She then worked for two years before attending college. She was the first in her family to pursue a degree. Marion moved to Albany to attend the State University of New York, College for Teachers at Albany (now SUNY Albany). She was a member of Signum Laudis, an honorary scholastic fraternity. While always working a job, or two, Marion put herself through college, graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1953. After college, Marion worked for the New York State Thruway Authority at the time the Thruway was just beginning to be built. She made lifelong friends among the small group of people working there. While working at the University Club in Albany during college, Marion met, and fell in love with, L. Murray Doody, Jr. They were married in Poughkeepsie, NY, on June 12, 1954 and settled in Albany. They had seven children. They were married 36 years when Murray died in 1990. In addition to raising their seven children, and making a home for the family, Marion was active volunteering for causes important to her. She was a Literacy Council volunteer for many years, working with people who spoke English as a second language. Marion also volunteered as a reader for the blind or visually impaired through the Northeastern Association of the Blind at Albany. When her youngest children were in high school, Marion worked part time for the NYS Department of Civil Service, as a proctor for civil service employment exams. Because of her experience working with the blind and visually impaired, Marion often worked with applicants who needed special accommodation, such as reading the exam aloud, or additional time for taking an exam in braille. Marion later worked full time at the NYS Department of Education. Marion loved to travel. She journeyed to Germany and Wales, to visit with family and friends. Later, after Murray’s death, Marion traveled to visit her grown children, visiting Texas, Washington State, and Alaska. She also visited Ireland with a local group from Albany. Marion is survived by her sons: Leo (Bonnie), Peter (Cheryl Feldman), Stephen (Eva Welchman), John (Anna), Kevin, Christopher “George” (Kathy Kuckarek); and her daughter Sheila (Kevin) Bishop; and her eight grandchildren: Sean Doody, Kathryn (Ryan) Fitzpatrick, Jeannette (Patrick) Bourey, Margaret (Vinu) Vijayan, Sarah Doody, Victoria Doody, James Doody, and William Doody. Services for family only will be on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at McVeigh Funeral Home at 208 North Allen Street, Albany.
