Jane Anne Hasselbach

Albany-Jane Hasselbach of Glenmont, aged 72, passed away peacefully on July 2 at her sister’s home in Schenectady, with her loving and adoring family by her side. Jane was born and raised in Albany’s South End neighborhood. She was a graduate of Albany High School, where she was a proud founding member of the Girls’ Varsity Softball team, paving the way for future generations of girls' sports. She attended SUNY Albany while working for many years at the old Dewitt Clinton Hotel in Albany. Jane retired in 2011 from her distinguished career with the New York State Department of Social Services, with which she worked for more than 40 years as a Database Administrator. Jane’s true passions, however, lay with her love for the outdoors and her selfless adoration for her family. A kind, patient, gentle spirit, she connected with wildlife on countless hiking and camping trips with her best friend Mary Lou Malinowski. She was the linchpin of countless Noonan/McDaniel family vacations to Cape Cod and Maine, during which she organized many whale-watching and nature excursions, much to the delight of her many nieces and nephews. Jane traveled extensively through the northeast and the Canadian Maritimes, pursuing her love of wildlife and nature. A very talented amateur photographer, Jane devotedly documented her travels and adventures on film. Jane greatly enjoyed the birthday celebrations and summer barbecues at her brother Bob’s house and outside in his enormous backyard. She particularly enjoyed the Christmas holiday and getting together with all the family for festivities and dinner at her brother Ken's house every year. She loved to splurge on gifts for everyone at Christmas time. Also the family holiday of 'Aunt Jane-mas' came to be about 20 years ago. This was celebrated shortly after Christmas, whereupon she would generously shower each and every family member with too many gifts, always making sure to include movie passes and flashlights! Jane was truly the best of aunts, invariably generous with her time, money, and caring nature with anyone who needed it. An avid reader, she voraciously consumed Harry Potter and Star Wars novels, in addition to fastidiously watching all manner of television mysteries, with a particular affinity for “Murder, She Wrote.” Jane always maintained an impressive garden at her home. She was a passionate fan of the New York Yankees, New York Giants, and the Boston Celtics and was luckily able to celebrate many championships throughout her life. She was a lover of music and held a special fondness for the life and works of John Denver. Although her last few months were spent confined to bed, she greatly enjoyed the opportunity to spend time cuddling with the three newest additions to the family, babies Atlas, Lochlan, and Henry (pronounced, of course, with a French flourish). Most of all, Jane was an extraordinarily kind, generous person. She was always welcoming and warm with new members of the family. A longtime member of the parish of St. John’s/St. Anne’s in the South End of Albany, she embodied a true Christian spirit and lifestyle. Jane was loving, forgiving, and never judged others. Her family members are all extremely lucky to have had her in their lives. Jane was predeceased by her parents, William and Helen Hasselbach, her niece Judi Lee Hasselbach, her nephew Michael Hasselbach, and her nephew Matthew McDaniel, with whom she shared a very close, fun-filled, and affectionate bond. Matt playfully referred to Jane as his “Great Aunt Benefactoid.” Jane’s survivors include her sister Nancy (Frank) Noonan of Schenectady, her brothers Bill Hasselbach, Bob (Cathy) Hasselbach, and Ken (Barbara) Hasselbach, all of Glemont, her 16 adoring nieces and nephews, her over 25 great-nieces and nephews, and her best friend of many years, Mary Lou Malinowski of Loudonville, and all of her extended family. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jane’s family Monday, July 11, 2022 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at St. Francis of Assisi Church, South End Worship Site, Albany, NY. Her Funeral Mass will follow at 12:00 pm. The Rite of Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont, NY immediately following the Mass.
