Loudonville- It is with great sadness that the family of Barbara Ann Carney Merges, age 75, announces that she passed away on September 2, 2018 after a long illness. Barbara was born in Albany, New York on June 5, 1943, the daughter of the late John and Marie (Hughes) Carney, and the granddaughter of the late Eugene and Mary Hughes. She graduated from Blessed Sacrament School and Vincentian Institute (Class of 1961) before obtaining a bachelor’s degree with honors from The College of Saint Rose (Class of 1965) on full academic scholarship and a master’s degree from the University of New York at Albany. Barbara initially served as a teacher in the Albany public school system, followed by many years as a Personnel Examiner with the New York State Department of Civil Services. It was during her time in college that Barbara met her husband, Dr. Paul J. Merges. Following their marriage in 1966, Barbara and Paul moved to Loudonville, where they spent many happy years raising their three sons. Barbara loved and cherished her family, and enjoyed nothing more than sharing Sunday dinners, holidays, and special events with her family and friends. She was exceptionally devoted to her Roman Catholic faith and was a proud Irish-American. Barbara will forever be remembered by her loving husband Paul; her middle son, Eugene Hughes Merges (Maureen) of Yonkers, their children, Patrick, Bridget, Christopher, and Matthew; her youngest son Brian Clark Merges (Julie) of Los Angeles, their children Abigail, Conor, and Quinn; and the children of her eldest son, Sean and Keara. Barbara was preceded by her eldest son, Paul J. Merges, Jr. and her very close family friend, Bishop Joseph W. Estabrook.
