Thomas E. McCarthy III

Thomas E. McCarthy III, 73, died Thursday, March 26, 2015. Tom was born in Albany, NY on April 24, 1941 to the late Donald and Janet McCormack McCarthy. He attended Christian Brothers Academy and was a graduate of Cardinal McCloskey High School and Siena College. Tom retired from the New York State Department of Labor in 1996, following 32 years of service. Tom was a very caring, extremely generous man. Having grown up in a family surrounded by classical music, he was a proud member of the South Colonie Opera Club, the Siena Opera Club and Saratoga Performing Arts Center. His musical tastes were varied. He enjoyed numerous opera trips to the Met in NYC, and he could also be seen at rock concerts at SPAC. Tom was an avid New York Giants and Yankees fan, although he did enjoy occasional trips to see “other” teams play. He is survived by his siblings Dr. Peter J. McCarthy of Leesburg, VA; Donald F. McCarthy Jr. of Albany, NY; Kevin and Mary Armao McCarthy of Loudonville, NY and Janet and Jim Kurposka of Voorheesville, NY. His nieces and nephew and their children cherish Uncle Tom’s memory. They are Drs. Anne and Dave Stewart (Abby, Baker and Ben) of Round Hill, VA; Elaine and Bob Verstandig (Joe, Tim, Tara and Allie) of Selkirk, NY; Mary Frances McCarthy of Voorheesville, NY; Christine and Chad Fowler (Noah) of Loudonville, NY; Michelle McCarthy and Joe O’Toole of Falls Church, VA; Kelly Kurposka of Albany, NY; and Michael McCarthy of Goshen, MA. In addition to three of his nieces, Tom was godfather to Dr. Kathy Aurelia Uzzilia. He remained close with life-long friends Jim Aurelia and Dick Zounes. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of both St Peter’s Hospital and the Hospice Inn (especially Julie and Catherine) for their wonderful care and attention. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution in Tom’s memory to the South Colonie Opera Club, c/o Colonie Central High School, 1 Raider Boulevard, Albany, NY 12205. All are invited to a commemorative reception for Tom at the Italian American Community Center, 257 Washington Avenue Extension, Albany on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A Memorial mass will be celebrated at The Church of Christ the King, 20 Sumter Avenue, Albany on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 10:00 a.m.
