Thomas R. Corcoran, Sr.

Voorheesville, NY-Thomas R. Corcoran Sr, 74, died Saturday, March 19, 2016 at his home surrounded by beloved family. Tom will be remembered fondly as a husband, father, grandfather, teacher, musician, gardener and confidant. Always a proud Vermonter, born in Rutland, he was the son of the late Charles J. and Ruth Ridlon Corcoran. Predeceased by sister Judith (and James) Smith of Rockville Centre, NY. He was a graduate of Mt. Saint Joseph’s Academy in Rutland and St. Michael’s College in Winooski where he was an accompanist to the Glee Club. His professional life started as a teacher of music and English working in secondary education. Tom then took to telecommunications employed by the New York Telephone Company and AT&T, retiring in 1999. In retirement, Tom was free to pursue his love of performing music. He was an accomplished and sought after pipe organist most recently at St. Francis of Assisi. When not playing music, Tom enjoyed perennial gardening, traveling extensively seeking inspiration for his next planting. Tom’s love of music and gardening was surpassed only by his devotion to family. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ellen O’Connell Corcoran who he met while both were young teachers. Together their family grew to children Thomas, Jr. (Jenny) of Watervliet, Justin of Albany, John (Deirdre) of San Francisco, and Brigid Jeffers (Matthew) of Clifton Park; grandchildren Abigail and Katherine Jeffers, Merrill Thomas Corcoran; and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited Tuesday, March 22, 2016 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany. Funeral services Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 7:30 am in the McVeigh Funeral Home, Albany thence to St. Matthew’s Church, Voorheesville at 8:30 where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. The Rite of Interment will be held at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands immediately following the Mass. The Corcoran family is grateful to The Community Hospice of Albany County whose compassionate care allowed Tom to pass away with dignity in the comfort of his home.
