Ruth Stella Ferris

Albany- Ruth Stella Ferris of Albany passed away peacefully on July 31, 2013. Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Pauline Scalora Ferris. She was predeceased by her brother, Frank Ferris, and sisters, Anna Ferris, Margaret Ferris and Josephine Michalich and her infant son, Frances Ferris. Ruth is the aunt of Frank Ferris of Albany, Susan Peate of Raleigh, NC, Eunis Sherman of Albany, Anna Delorenze of Carey, NC and Pauline Fantanzzi of Carey, NC. She is also survived by her grandniece, Debra Ginsberg, and her grandnephew, Darrell Ferris, as well as several other grandnieces and grandnephews. After graduating from the former Philip Schuyler High School, Ruth earned her BA from the College of Saint Rose, and she received her MA from NYS College for Teachers. Ruth later studied at the Robert A. Taft Institute of Government Seminars at Russell Sage College. She taught at the former Philip Livingston and at Albany High School for 32 ½ years. Ruth greatly enjoyed listening to classical music, attending the Metropolitan Opera, playing piano and traveling. She took much pride in teaching school. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic organization which provides scholarships for students, and she served on its committee. She cherished the friendship of her P.E.O. sisters. Ruth has expressed her affection for and thanks to a number of special friends, including her dear friend and caregiver, Owen Glenn; John Agrusti, Beauford Greb and George Bullock, for many years of friendship; Mary Barber and her family; Mary and Artie Bartlett; Madeleine Kennedy; Joanne Toomey; Bill Hamel and Greg Harris. In addition, she has expressed gratitude to each of the nurses and health aides who cared for her during her time at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, NY, and thanks to Community Hospice of Albany for their many kindnesses in providing care. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2013 11:00 am at the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Friday, August 2, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery.
