Robert N. Signor

ALBANY -Robert N. Signor passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren, on Wednesday June 29, 2011 after a courageous battle with lung disease. He was 84 years old. Robert was the son of Harry R. Signor and Florence Shutter of Albany. He was married to his loving and devoted wife Dorothy Gotha for 63 years, and was the proud and supportive father to nine children. He will join his daughter Sharon Signor-Purcell, who passed away in November 2008, in heaven. He is survived by his daughters, Linda (Michael) Michalak, Donna (Gregory) Kirby, Dorothy (Matthew) LaClair as well as sons, Robert (Bernadette) Signor, Richard (Debra) Signor, Michael (Victoria) Signor, John (Loretta) Signor, Thomas (Kristin) Signor and son-in-law J. Peter Purcell. He is also survived by his 27 cherished grandchildren and one great granddaughter, each of whom held a special place in his heart. They are, Julie Ann Purcell, Sharon (Jake) Conlin, Michael Michalak; Justin, Christopher and Daniel Signor; Karl and Eric Signor; Christopher, Brendan, Emily, Conor, Molly and Maggie Kirby; Myla and Jared Signor; Ryan Barnett; Christian, Alyssa and Drew Signor; Brittany, Matthew, Justin, Braden, Jakob, Ava and Cameron LaClair, and great granddaughter Fionna Conlin. He was a graduate of Albany High School and, along with his brother Don, actively served in two theatres of war during World War II (1945) and the Korean War (1950), where he fought with the First Marine Division and was one the survivors (Chosin Few) of the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. He was also a member of the Fort Orange Post #30, American Legion. He was employed at the Williams Press for more than 20 years and retired from the Watervliet Arsenal in 1993. He was an avid golfer and played religiously every weekend at the Albany Municipal Golf Course. He enjoyed vacations with his family at the Jersey Shore and Myrtle Beach. Robert’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at St. Peter’s Hospital, especially the staff of 4 Gab who provided and care and compassion during his most difficult time. And particular thanks to Dr. Howard Terry for the longstanding medical care he provided to Robert. Those who knew Robert and the Signor family understand the loss that his family and friends feel; rather than mourn his loss, the family would prefer that we all celebrate the wonderful life he had and the devotion he gave to his family. Funeral services Wednesday 10:30 a.m. at Mater Christi Church, Albany where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow the Mass at 1:30pm in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery for a military burial. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Tuesday, 4 to 8 p.m. in the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany.
