Paul M. DeRusso

ALBANY-Paul M. DeRusso, 81, son of the late Dr. Louis J. and Alice G. DeRusso, and husband of the late Theresa Thaler DeRusso died on Thursday, October 4, 2012, surrounded by his loving children. An Albany native, he graduated from Christian Brothers Academy, received both Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a Doctor of Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined the faculty at RPI in 1959 until he retired in 1993. During that time he became a Professor, Chairman of the Systems Engineering Division and for several years held the position of Dean of Engineering. During his career he was elected Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He was the lead co-author of a book entitled “State Variables for Engineers” which was the first book to achieve widespread adoptions at engineering schools in this country and abroad. Paul was a long term member and past Board member of Wolfert’s Roost Country Club. One of his many passions was horse racing. He developed a handicapping business known as Thoroughbred Performance Evaluation Services and spent many summer days at the racetrack in Saratoga. He is survived by his children, Paul (Cindy) DeRusso of Rochester, NY, Patricia (Christopher Forrest) DeRusso of Philadelphia, PA, Lisa (Stephen) Miller of Slingerlands, NY, and his first wife, Kathleen Scherer Murphy. He is also survived by 9 loving grandchildren: Katherine and Michael DeRusso; Alexandra, Kathryn and Jackson Forrest; Daniel, Andrew, Casey and Alison Miller. He was the brother of the late Louis DeRusso. Funeral service Monday at 8:15 am from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 N. Allen St., Albany thence to St. Pius X Church at 9:00 am, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the funeral home. Interment St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
