Lois N. Nichols

Saratoga Springs-Lois Jane Newcomb Nichols, 83, of Saratoga Springs and Estero, Florida, passed away peacefully Friday, November 5, 2010 surrounded by her family. Born in Albany September 8, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John Edward and Katherine Rapp Newcomb. In 1946 she married Richard Frances Nichols of Albany. She is a 1945 graduate of Albany High School. She attended Maria College after raising her family. She was employed by the New York Phone Company whereafter she became a fulltime wife, mother and homemaker. During this time she was a bookkeeper for the family business, Ontario Scrap Metal, Inc. She was later employed by H&R Block and Coldwell Banker Real Estate. Her former New York residences include Albany, Guilderland and Loudonville, and Florida residences Vero Beach, Naples and Bonita Springs. Lois was a member of the Aurania Club and Wolferts Roost Country Club in Albany and Pinehaven Country Club in Guilderland. She was an avid bridge player and taught classes while residing in Florida. Lois enjoyed bowling, golfing and traveling with her husband. However, her greatest joy came from the times spent with her family. Holiday dinners and family cookouts were among her favorite times. Nothing was more important to her than her family, all of whom will miss her dearly. Lois is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Richard F. Nichols; five daughters, Barbara (William) Ahl of Saratoga Springs, Helen Lynn Nichols of Saratoga Springs, Lois (Patrick) Maroney of St. Petersburg, FL, Laurie (Michael) Ryan of Clifton Park, and Jayne (John) Shahda of Loudonville; nine grandchildren, Richard (Kathleen) Ahl, David (Caroline) Ahl, Kathryn (Ted) Martin, Molly Conners, Daniel (Sara) Maroney, Meghan (Matthew) Clary, Kelly (Yuri) Ushakov, Jessica Shahda, John Shahda; predeceased by a sister, Eileen Boll, and survived by a sister, Carol (Norman) Bullinger of Raleigh, NC; nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 10:30am in the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Wednesday, 3:00 to 7:00 pm in the funeral home. Interment Albany Rural Cemetery.
