Leslie J. Bernard

Albany, NY-Leslie Joseph Bernard of Albany NY passed away peacefully on December 17, 2023. Born on June 18, 1941 to Leslie Arthur and Mary Catherine (Darrigo) Bernard, Leslie spent most of his life in Albany, New York. Following graduation from high school, Leslie served in the US Navy. Upon his return, he worked at Saint Peter’s Hospital where we he met the love of his life, Margaret (Shinkwin), who he was married to for 57 years. As long time residents of Colonie, NY, Leslie and Margaret raised their four daughters in a loving home. Leslie spent most of his career in insurance sales with John Hancock Insurance and later Woodman Life Insurance. He went on to work for the Internal Revenue Service as a Researcher before retiring. As an avid golfer, retirement suited Leslie. He partnered with blind golfers for many years and competed in tournaments. He also enjoyed bike riding, Yankees games and sharing laughs with family. Leslie indulged daily in his love of chocolate which he inherited from his beloved Aunt Wini. In addition to his parents, Leslie was predeceased by his brother Alan Bernard. He is survived by his wife Margaret (Peggy), daughters Suzanne (Dan) O’Neil, Michelle (Jerry) Kiciuk, Maria Bernard (Jason Rhoads), and Theresa Bernard, sister Elaine (Joe) Habbinger and brother Joe (Mary) Bernard. He is also survived by grandchildren Julia O’Neil, Aidan O’Neil and Joshua Mazari as well as many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Leslie’s family Wednesday, December 20, 2023 8:30 am to 10:00 am at McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany, NY 12206. Please enter the funeral home from the rear parking lot entrance only. His Funeral Service will follow and be celebrated at 10:30 am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 607 Central Ave. (Father John Bradley Way) Albany, NY 12206. The Rite of Committal will be held at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, NY immediately following the Mass.
