Joyce E. Casella

Schenectady, NY-Joyce Elaine Casella, age 93, of Schenectady, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on March 25, 2023. Joyce was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, the daughter of the late Marinus and Jessie Thomas Krom. Her humorous stories of growing up during the depression in a family of eleven children will always be remembered and cherished. She was an amazing homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who found joy in being surrounded by those she loved the most, hosting holiday and birthday gatherings, which included her famous meatballs, playing LRC games to early morning hours, and listening to CD’s and dancing in the kitchen. Her strength, spirit, and love were an inspiration to her family and friends. Her energy and enthusiasm for life was amazing, reminding her family “to always keep moving,” the secret to her longevity. She enjoyed trips to Atlantic City with her late husband, Ernest, vacationing with her family in Las Vegas, taking bus trips and vacations with her daughters, son-in-law, Joe, and life-long friend, Mary Cole, and spending summers at her daughter’s camp. In more recent years, she found enjoyment in her many trips to Newport with her family sailing, sightseeing, antiquing, and always ready for new “first-time” adventures, even into her eighties and nineties. Joyce is predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, Ernesto Concetta Casella; sisters Jane, June, Judy, and Jill; brothers Rene, Calvin, Peter, David and Rocky. She is survived by her beloved daughters, Rosanne Nastke (Joseph) of Valatie, Susan Thorpe (Robert) of Averill Park, Joanne Garrison (Paul LaMalfa) of Schenectady, and Diane Casella of Albany. She is also survived by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who always kept her young at heart, Jason Nastke (Dennis Brown) of Valatie, Christopher Nastke of Valatie, Jade Casella of Rensselaer, and Sage VandeBogart of Albany, and great-grandchildren, Jivonte Banks and Remington Nastke; sister Jacquelyn Aragona (Joseph) of Scotia; and sister-in-laws, Kathy, Marie and Mary Jane Krom. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Joyce created a beautiful family filled with much love and laughter. She was our matriarch and inspiration and now she is our angel. She will be forever loved and remembered. The family would like to thank Home Medical Associates and The Community Hospice for their compassion, care and support.
