John Paul Seward

Loudonville-John Paul “Jay” Seward passed from this life into one of eternal peace on April 19, 2013, in his Loudonville home. During his nine month battle with metastatic gastric cancer Jay faced each day anew, with great optimism, humor, faith and gratitude for the love and support given so generously by his family and friends. Mr. Seward was born in Albany, NY, on June 24, 1947, to the late Mary Gladys Prime and Robert Carr Seward, Sr. He graduated from Cardinal McCloskey High School in 1966 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern New Hampshire University, a Master’s in Education from Russell Sage College, and a Master’s in Educational Administration from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Mr. Seward taught for the City School District of Albany in various capacities for 27 years, including many years at the Albany County Correctional Facility, in a program he helped develop. During much of this same time period, Mr. Seward was also employed by the City of Albany as the director of Recreation Centers. In recent years, Mr. Seward went on to work part-time for the New York State Thruway Authority, especially enjoying his role in education and training. For more than three decades Mr. Seward coached recreational teams in basketball and both recreational and school teams in baseball. He remained a long-time Director of the Albany Twilight League. Mr. Seward is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Norma “Darby” Whalen Seward, and by his adored children Molly Bridget and Kevin George Seward, both of Loudonville. Mr. Seward is also survived by his siblings, Robert Seward, Jr. (Anna May) of East Greenbush, Mary Warner of Guilderland, Thomas (Judy) Seward of Delmar, Joseph (Karen) Seward of Hawaii, Ernest (Pam) Seward of Delmar and Phil (Sharon Groves) Seward of Colonie. Several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews who fondly called him “Uncle,” as well as his closest friend, Frank Casimo, also survive him. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Jay’s life will be held at St. Pius X Church by Rev. Michael Farano, who has been an ever-present friend and support to Jay and his family, on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 10:00 am, with services beginning at the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany at 9:15 am. Family and friends may call at the McVeigh Funeral Home on Monday, April 22 from 3pm-7pm. Burial will be at a later date at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, NY.
