John B. Heffernan

Albany - John B. "Jack" Heffernan passed away on Monday April 4, 2016 in the company of his beloved wife and devoted family at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Born in Albany, New York, Jack was the son of the late Bernard and Mary (Cooney) Heffernan. Jack graduated from Cathedral Academy and Sage College. He received his Master's degree from the University at Albany. Jack was a Marine Corp veteran serving at Camp Lejeune from 1946 to 1948. He retired from the NY State Department of Motor Vehicles as the Director of Fiscal Accounts after 36 years of State service. Jack was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church. He was an avid reader, and a good mystery was his favorite. Jack loved history and had a great thirst for knowledge and learning new things, a combination that made him unbeatable in trivia pursuit. He was a fan of baseball and the New York Yankees and enjoyed rooting for Notre Dame Football. Jack's greatest joy was spending time with his wife and family, and he brought them humor and laughter every day. No matter what the situation, Jack was able to find the humor and joy, and you would be hard pressed not to smile and laugh in his company. He was a loyal friend ever ready to lend a helping hand. Jack is survived by his loving wife Joan (Gadoua) Heffernan. He was the devoted father to John Heffernan, Jr., Gary Heffernan and Kathyann Heffernan; caring father-in-law to Joy Hefley and the cherished grandfather of Jenny and Julia Heffernan. He was the proud brother of the late Mary Gravell and dear Uncle of several nieces and nephews including the thoughtful Joanne, Mark and Jack Gravell, Sharon Walsh and Lisa Lund. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jack's family on Sunday April 10, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany. A Funeral mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church, Albany at 9:00 am on Monday April 11, 2016. The Rite of Interment will be held at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands immediately following mass.
