Albany, NY-John Anthony Hartigan, Jr. age 94 of Albany, beloved husband of Jean M. Lewis Hartigan entered the fullness of Eternity on February 20, 2026. Born in Albany on December 1, 1931 to Harriett and John A. Hartigan, Sr. He attended St. Patrick’s elementary school, Christian Brother’s Academy, then Siena College earning his BA in English (salutatorian) and MBA from Syracuse University. John married his dearest Jean on June 10, 1961, sharing 64 blessed years with a million and one happy and memorable moments. His second greatest gift was his two loving devoted children, Joan Mary and John Joseph, taking great delight in their lives. Always grateful to his two dear sisters-in-law, Sr. Joan Lewis, O. Carm. and Sr. Marguerite Lewis, SBS for sharing their close brother- sister relationships. His life included 37 years of public service, both in the Division of Budget and the University of New York at Albany where he retired as Vice President for Finance and Business in 1992. He served on many boards particularly proud of his contribution to Chapel House at SUNYA. Before and after retiring, he served as an active volunteer in both community and religious non-profits. John was an avid reader, sports fan and loved classical music. Many times he shared his wisdom and wit. John and Jean traveled often, enjoying especially a trip to South Carolina to see Father Aidan Carr, Trappist Monk, his close friend. He was happy, writing children’s books, publishing “Kendal the Baker Bee”. He continued to perfect this art for most of his later senior years. John became an ambassador at the Albany International Airport and enjoyed helping with their Newsletter. John’s faith and the love of God dwelt at his core. He showed deep kindness, compassion and understanding to all. He was a communicant of Mater Christi. John is survived by his beloved wife, cherished children; Sr. Joan Mary Hartigan, CSJ, John (Rick Cook), sisters-in law; Sr. Joan Lewis, O Carm., Kathie Hartigan, and special friend Sr. Renee Adamany, CSJ. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Francis, William, sister and brother-in-law Joan (Jerry) Dombrowski, and sisters-in law Faith Eagan and Sr. Marguerite Lewis, SBS. The Family are deeply grateful to the Carmelite Sisters, Frank Yeboah, Adm and the staff at the Teresian House, and lovingly thank Nicola Rizzo, N.P. and the dedicated nurses, aides and staff who provided compassionate care for him on the 6A wing. On Saturday, February 28, 2026 there will be visitation from 10-11:30 am followed by a Memorial Prayer Service at the McVeigh Funeral Home, Albany, N.Y.
