John H. Harrigan, III

ALBANY-John H. Harrigan’s earthly ship sailed away on Saturday December 17, 2016 at St. Peter’s Nursing and Rehabilitation center with his family at his bedside. Born in Albany on May 14, 1938, he was the son of the late John H. Harrigan, Jr., and Anne E. Stafford Harrigan. John was a graduate of Vincentian Institute and attended Union College where he was a member of Alpha Pi Chapter of Chi Psi Fraternity. John then joined his father in the family painting and decorating business. John was a Navy veteran and was stationed in Sublant in New London, Connecticut. He joined Albany Protective Service in 1969 and held the position of Plant Manager for many years. John is survived by his wife Margaret, his daughter Anne, his son Michael, his grandson Devon, his sister Nancy Harrigan, his sisters-in- law Mary Alice Morgan (Edward) and Maureen Conners, his brother-in-law Michael Conners (Kathleen), his dear cousins Joan Coyne (Robert), MaryLou LeFebure (Charles), Col. Joseph Mc Nichols (Mary) and John Mc Nichols (Carol) as well as nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. He met his wife, Margaret (Peg) Egan Conners, at Sacred Heart Church in North Albany, and captured her attention when he requested a bumper sticker for her father Richard’s congressional campaign. John knew the way to Peg’s heart was through politics and books and he spent 11 years waiting while she completed graduate study and college teaching. John was a quiet man who loved to fix things and believed that a piece of equipment or appliance was meant to last forever. He recycled long before it was fashionable and viewed “clutter” through the eyes of a depression and World War II child. He was devoted to his wife and spent innumerable hours ferrying his wife to libraries and historical societies in other states as well as to other activities. John generously supported his children's activities whether it was driving them to Jiminy Peak to ski, making sure they could spend time with friends and family at The Great Escape, or ferrying them to Scouting and sporting events. One of the great passions of John’s life was the Chris-Craft motorboat owned by his family for several years. He loved sailing down the Hudson to visit relatives on Long Island and carried a picture of the boat in his wallet. A special thanks to Dr. Richard E. Lavigne and his wonderful staff, to Dr. James R. Storey and also to the doctors, nurses and staff of 2 and 5 McAuley and 5 and 6 Brady Farrell of St. Peter’s Hospital and of 1 North and 1 West of St. Peter’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their excellent care. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John’s family on Wednesday December 21, 2016 4-7 p.m. at McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen St, Albany. Funeral services at 9:30 am on December 22, 2016, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Albany, where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. The Rite of Interment will immediately follow the Mass at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
