Grace L. Gross

Albany-Grace L. Gross, 95, formerly of Argo Blvd., Schenectady and Colonie Manor in Latham passed away Monday, April 7, 2014 after a long and productive life. At the time of her passing, Grace was residing in Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home in Albany. Grace was born in Manhattan in New York City on October 8, 1918. She was the daughter of the late Josephine and John Long and the step daughter of the late Richard Wolf. Grace and her family moved to the Capital District in 1948, and then lived on Argo Boulevard for 56 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick Gross, also of New York City and the Capital District. Grace worked for the YMCA and then for many years at Schenectady High School where she was a secretary in the guidance department. She was an avid gardener, reader, and traveler as well as an accomplished seamstress. She loved all music, especially Broadway shows and the Big Bands of her youth. Always intrigued by art, she pursued drawing, painting and other creative projects for many years. Grace loved her family first and foremost. She is survived by her two daughters, Joanne Whipple (Jack) of Glenmont and Judith Andrew (Dennis) of Milford, MA and by five grandchildren, James Lockman of Glenmont, Jennifer Connors (David) of Ohio, Carolyn DeKalb (Michael) of Georgia, Danielle King and Barbara Quattrocchi of MA. Known as “Gigi”, her seven great grandchildren include Jordan Lockman, Kaylie and Samantha Connors, Sadie Quattrocchi, Tanner Cross, Alex and Ashley DeKalb. She is further survived by a niece and nephew, Lynne Murphy and John Strasdin, three cousins, Ruth Aprea, Helen McGurn, Raymond VonDrak and their families. We would like to extend thanks to the staff members of Colonie Manor and Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home for their kind and compassionate care. We would also like to thank all who knew and cared for Grace as a neighbor, friend, and colleague. Funeral arrangements through McVeigh Funeral Home in Albany will take place at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Queens, NYC. At the request of the family, there will be a private graveside ceremony.
