George E. Nealon

Albany-George E. Nealon, 66, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 in Vero Beach, Florida. Born in Albany on November 18, 1947, he was the son of the late Frank and Pauline O’Brien Nealon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from 1967 to 1969 and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered during combat in Vietnam. He was a horn player with the Valiant Crusaders, the Interstatesmen and The New York Skyliners Drum and Bugle Corps (DCA Champions 1971). He earned his BA from SUNY Albany and MBA from the Lally School of Management at RPI. Mr. Nealon was Commissioner of Public Works for the City of Albany, serving under Mayors Corning, Whalen and Jennings. He was Marketing Manager for Landfill Technologies, traveling to trade shows throughout the United States. He was later Commissioner of Public Works for the County of Albany, serving under Albany County Executive Michael Breslin. Following his retirement, he and his wife Cyra enjoyed their winter months as snow birds in Vero Beach, Florida. They also enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina as well as to Cape Cod in September and a Caribbean cruise every winter. He was a member of the Captain William Dale O’Brien Detachment of the Marine Corps League for many years in a variety of offices, including Commandant. He was also a member of the Fort Orange American Legion Post, the Garbarina-Mazarakos American Legion Post (NYC), Knights of Columbus in Albany, 4th Degree Knight, Trustee and Usher at the former St. Teresa of Avila Church and Trustee of the Mater Christi Parish. He had also volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 149 and National Little League in Albany. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cyra Vultaggio Nealon, his son Matthew and daughter Mary Foglia (Dominic). He is also survived by his brother Nicolas and sisters Kathleen Decker (George) and Noreen Spinrad (Thomas) and their families. Funeral services Tuesday, February 25 at 9:30 from McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany thence to Mater Christi Parish at 10:00 am, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be at 12:00 noon Tuesday following the Mass at Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, February 24, 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the funeral home.
