George T. Gates Jr.

Niskayuna, NY-George Thomas Gates Jr, 88, of Niskayuna passed away peacefully on March 20, 2023 with his loving family by his side. George was born in Troy on October 13, 1934, son of the late George and Dorothea (Brenz) Gates. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and Albany Business College. George then served his country proudly and honorably in the United States Army and upon his return home married the love of his life, Judith O’Connor (Judy) on May 30, 1959. George was the owner and operator of two fuel oil delivery and service companies - Capitol Oil Corp and Gates Oil Corp. He was also the co-owner and operator of Marrianne’s Paint & Wallpaper in Albany for a number of years. He finished his working career as courier for Colonie BOCES. George was especially fond of working in his yard and he always made sure the landscaping at his various homes over the years was the pride of the neighborhood. He was an avid golfer for most of his life, and played his final round the same month he turned 87 years old. George also had a love of travel. With his young family, summers were spent at the beach in Lavallette, NJ. In his later years he enjoyed spending his winters in Marco Island, FL with Judy and their many friends. He loved to share stories from their gatherings at the Tiki Bar. George was predeceased in 2020 by his wife of 61 years, Judith and by his sister Dorothy Swim in 1970. He is survived by sons Thomas (Janice) Gates of Clifton Park, Michael (Khristina) Gates of Fairport, Paul (Lisa) Gates of Loudonville, and Daniel (Barbara) Gates of Latham; his cherished grandchildren Shannon, Shawn, Marissa, Emily, Tyler (Emily), and Dylan as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany, NY 12206 on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at 11 AM. Please enter the funeral home from the rear parking lot entrance only. Following the services he will be reunited with his beloved Judy at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at 1 PM.
