In Loving Memory of Gaspar Castillo With his loving family by his side, Gaspar Castillo, was led by angels to his eternal home on June 2, 2025 at the age of 90. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose lives he touched. Gaspar was a hard worker and prided himself on being a provider for his family. In his early years, he worked in a pharmacy, as a cleaner, and a patient transporter at Mount Sinai Hospital. He then worked as a Sterile Technician at NYU Hospital for many years until his retirement. He instilled his work ethic and value of education in his children. He himself obtained his GED later in life. Gaspar was dedicated to not only his nuclear family, but his extended family, as well. In addition to opening his home to family, he provided guidance and financial support to many over the years. The stories are countless and so many are grateful for who he was, what he did for them, and what he stood for in the family. None more than his children who were grateful for the lessons and values he taught and the love he shared with them. Not a day passed where he did not ask about his grandchildren and great grandchildren and extend his blessing (Dios te bendiga) to his children. Gaspar had many nicknames such as Junior, Jasper, Señor, and Chefo; but his loving children fondly called him Papi. He showed his affection for others by providing them nicknames that often grew in popularity, Guaraguao, Chefa, & Norrio to name a few. Papi was a bigger than life personality. His deep voice and tendency for the flair and practical joke always filled a room. He would infamously say, “But I’m only joking” and who could forget his “deo” move and his trademark chicken drawing in all of his cards. Papi enjoyed smoking cigars, scratch offs, going to the casino, and watching the news, Law & Order, wrestling, and in recent years, daytime TV shows. He looked forward to sharing the day’s news with his children and family members and often offered colorful commentary. Gaspar equally loved to dance and listen to music especially to the tunes of Celia Cruz and “jibaro” melodies. Even in his 90s, he could cut a rug with the best of them. His son-in-law, Walter, with whom he shared a special relationship, is a testament to his dancing ability. Papi also enjoyed playing dominoes and looked forward to competing against others especially against his son, Gaspar. He would relish standing up with his hands to his side and chest out to say “Capicu”. He treasured his moments with his children and family. Gaspar was born on January 7, 1935 in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico. His parents, Gaspar Castillo & Francisca Santos, his loving wife, Tomasa, his brothers, Remy, Francisco, and Nikita, his sisters, Guillermina &Chavez, and his son-in-law, Miguel, predeceased him. He is survived by his loving children, Gaspar, Frances, and Elizabeth, cherished grandchildren, Miguel & Melissa, & great grand-children, Michael & Maleea, devoted son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Walter & Deborah, beloved siblings, Luz Evelyn, Maria Amelia, and Mayra and a host of nephews and nieces and friends too many to name, but still special in his heart. Although Papi’s physical presence will no longer grace our lives, his spirit will continue to uplift us and his light will forever shine brightly in our hearts. Descansa en paz, Papi. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family, Friday, June 6, 2025 from 12:45 – 2:00 p.m. at the Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell Street. A funeral mass will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m.
