E. Paul Campion

Albany-E. Paul Campion, 87, died Friday, October 30, 2009 at Teresian House. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late George and Nan Carlin Campion. Paul’s father was the second generation operator of the former Campion Funeral Home on Broadway in North Albany. He was a 1940 graduate of Vincentian Institute, Albany. Paul was a US Army, WW II veteran serving in the Pacific Theater, and was awarded a Battle Star. He worked for Lone Star Co., Glens Falls Cement, and MM. Hayes Co. Paul’s great devotion was not just to his beloved late sisters, Kathryn and Mary, but also to the University of Notre Dame, and the Holy Cross Fathers. Over the years Paul and his sisters attended countless football and basketball games, and developed friendships with many of the school’s greatest modern-era heroes, including Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., Edward W. “Moose” Krause, and the legendary coach, Lou Holtz. These men-of-Notre Dame, along with countless other ND staff and alumni corresponded regularly with Paul both on and off campus, and shared with him the mission of not just crafting the future of our youth, but a deep and abiding devotion to our Blessed Mother. Paul’s presence within the Notre Dame family wasn’t his only contribution to the University, but as benefactor he was a longtime member of the Edward Frederick Sorin Society and the Holy Cross Association. His passion for Notre Dame also brought him to election as a founding member of the Notre Dame Club of Northeastern New York Board of Directors. He was a communicant, Lector, and Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s Church, Albany, and life member of Ft. Orange Club and American Legion. He was a member of Wolferts Roost Country Club and charter member of the WW II Foundation and United States Golf Associates. Paul was the brother of the late Joseph F. Campion, George A. Campion, III, Kathryn J and Mary E. Campion, and Alice Campion Carrano. Funeral services Monday at 8:45 am from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany thence to the Historic Church of St. Mary on Capitol Hill at 9:30 am where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Sunday, 3:00 to 5:00 pm in the funeral home. Interment St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
