Ellen Fay Harmon

Albany-Ellen Fay Harmon, died Thursday, September 3, 2015. Born on July 21, 1927 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late George W. Fay and Phyllis Kinney Fay Ford. Ellen moved to Albany from Harmon-on-Hudson in 1938. Ellen graduated from Vincentian Institute in 1944, and has been a parishioner of the Church of St. Vincent DePaul since 1938. She earned her B.A. in 1949 from State University of Albany and her M.A. in 1950. Ellen taught in the City School District of Albany at the former P.S. #4 from 1950-1952. From 1948-1953 Ellen was the Children’s Program Director for WROW, and also hosted her own program, “The Good Fairy.” In 1977 she returned to teaching after a 25-year maternity leave. Ellen was a member of the Science Faculty at Albany High School, retiring in 1992. She was a regular reader for print disabled (RISE) from 1992-2013 and has been an AIDS Care Partner for the EDDY VNA since 1995. Ellen was a former member of the Board of Directors for Catholic Charities Diocesan AIDS Services. She was the wife of Thomas R. Harmon whom she married on August 16, 1952 in the Church of St. Vincent DePaul; beloved mother of Mary Ellen O’Connell (James), Thomas J. Harmon (Laurie), Michael G. Harmon, Karen T. Law, William P. Harmon, ret CDR John V. Harmon (Maureen), Maureen Fay Harmon, Phyllis Fay Blow (Steven), the late David R.J. Harmon and James F. Harmon; beloved aunt and godmother of Edward M. Fleming and Rev. George P. Fleming; beloved grandmother of numerous grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited and may visit with Ellen’s family Tuesday, September 8, 2015 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the McVeigh Funeral Home, Albany. Funeral services Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 11:00 am in the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany thence to the Church of St. Vincent dePaul at 11:30 am where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by her beloved nephew, Rev. George Fleming. Interment will immediately follow the Mass at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. In lieu of flowers donations in Ellen’s memory may be made to either the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry, RISE radio programming of WMHT, or Catholic Charities Diocesan AIDS Services.
