Dolores Yvonne Scanlon

Menands-Dolores Yvonne Scanlon passed April 27, 2016 at her home with her loving family at her side. Born March 15, 1932 in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Charles Duane Bartlett and Margaret Naomi Ostendorf Hensel, Voni was raised in Albany and attended the Academy of the Holy Names graduating in 1949, serving as class president three of her four years. She worked at the NY Telephone Co and in 1952 married the love of her life Andrew James Scanlon. They celebrated their sixty fourth wedding anniversary one week ago. Voni volunteered her services in numerous endeavors serving as preschool teacher and religious education instructor. She served on the auxiliary board of Good Samaritan Hospital chairing galas and charity events. She served on the Magoun Landing Yacht Club auxiliary board and on the Southward Ho Country Club golf committee. Voni and Andy were well traveled having visited Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America. She has been an active parishioner at St. Pius X parish. Voni is predeceased by her four siblings: Charles Duane Hensel, Ellen Patricia Jarret (Dick), William Jordan Hensel (Ann), James Nicholas Hensel and by her daughter Joann Scanlon. Voni is survived by her sisters in law: Mary Haley Hensel of Orlando Fl, Margaret Elaine Minotti of Potsdam and Joan Hensel Grunwald of Albany, by her five children: Patricia Maureen Scanlon of Menands, Andrew James Scanlon (Carolyn Arcario) of Huntington, NY, Maura O’Brien (Jim) of Loudonville, Susan Naomi Wilding (Mark) of St. Leonards, MD and Michael Patrick Scanlon (Mirela) of Richmond, VA. Voni or Nanny as she is called, is survived by her thirteen grandchildren: Justin Patrick Williams, Andrew James Scanlon IV, Joanna Scanlon, Stephen Andrew Williams, Megan Patricia Sozzi (Gary), James Patrick O’Brien, Kaitlin Emily Wilding, Erin Elizabeth O’Brien, Bridget Elaine Wilding, Caroline Grace O’Brien, Joseph Andrew Wilding, Clara Abigail Scanlon, Madison Dolores Scanlon, by her great granddaughter Casandra Rae Sozzi and by many nieces and nephews. Her faith and her family were at the center of her life. She had a special devotion to our Blessed Mother. She demonstrated concern for others and could always see the good in people. With her loving personality she would light up a room and was always ready with words of encouragement or a quick joke to make you laugh. Whether entertaining at a business function, hosting Sunday dinner or cheering her grandkids on at a sporting event her love and joy were always evident. She was one of a kind. Nan had many sayings one of which stood out: “It’s a short lease”. Nanny understood this and made the most of her 84 years. We are all so blessed to have had her be such a big part of our lives. Funeral services Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 11:00 am from the McVeigh Funeral Home, Albany thence to St. Pius X Church, Loudonville at 11:30 am where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated.
