Dana Norman Smith

Rotterdam-Dana Norman Smith passed away at the Our Lady of Mercy Life Center, Guilderland, on November 22, 2018, under Hospice Care, surrounded by his loving family after a three and a half year courageous battle with illness. He was born in Albany on September 13, 1959 and was raised in Castleton, New York. He graduated from Maple Hill High School, class of 1978. He worked in the construction materials industry, spending much of his career at Albany Ladder Co., Inc. and more recently as Operations Manager at Allied Building Products. Dana is warmly remembered for his positive attitude, uplifting encouragement and warm smile, willing to do anything for anyone. He dedicated himself to family and community, raising four children as his own, pivotal in all aspects of their lives, spreading his love in many directions, including the Castleton Youth Commission, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region, the Boy Scouts of America, Stride Adaptive Sports and as a board member of the Stable Gate community where he lived. He loved the outdoors, camping, boating and golfing. Dana is survived by wife, Marie Smith of Rotterdam; three children, daughters, Patricia Kavanaugh Lyons of Austin, Texas and Melissa Kavanaugh of Latham, and son, Michael (Susan) Kavanaugh of Guilderland; sisters, Barbara (Frank) Felts of Schenectady, Donna (Enrique) Alvarez of Little River, South Carolina, Sandra Smith of Colonie, and Cindy (Ron) Lammerts of Gloversville; four grandchildren, Timmy, Lily, Augie and Jacob; three nieces and four nephews. He was predeceased by parents, Miriam (Clapp) and Norman Smith, sister Linda (Lloyd) Church and son, R. Thomas Kavanaugh. Family and friends who wish to call may do so on Tuesday, November 27, from 4 to 7 pm at McVeigh Funeral Home, inc., 208 North Allen Street, Albany. The parish family of Christ the King Church will gather at 4:30 pm Tuesday in the funeral home for a service of prayer and remembrance. All are welcome. A mass of Christian burial will take place on Wednesday November 28 at Christ the King Church, 20 Sumter Ave., Albany at 11am. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Albany.
