Anita T. Mackin

Rexford, NY-Anita T. Mackin, resident of Coburg Village, Rexford, NY, died peacefully at home on March 14, 2026, just shy of her 95th birthday. Anita was born in Syracuse, NY in 1931 to Henry and Florence Travis (Trzpis). She received a bachelor’s degree from Lemoyne College and a master’s degree from New York State College for Teachers, now University at Albany. In August 1953, she married Robert H. Mackin, Jr., (“Bob”) to whom she remained married until his death in 2012. At the time of her marriage, Anita taught English at Waterloo High School. In 1954, when Anita expected her first child, she and Bob moved to Syracuse. Anita interrupted her teaching career to raise four children, all of whom admired and cherished her very much. They are Barbara Mackin of Herndon, VA, Florence Richardson Mastro (Arkley) of Albany, NY, Marian Roberge (James) of Ann Arbor, MI, and Jack Mackin (Alecia) of Oak Ridge, NC. Anita is also survived by her grandchildren, Lucas Richardson (Mary Patton), Elizabeth Fatseas (Jacob Burnheimer), Kevin Mastro (Christina), Matthew Roberge, and Paul Roberge, and her great grandchildren, Angus Richardson and Mabel Richardson. She delighted in being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother and all the “kids” enjoyed her humor and intellect. After her children were grown, Anita resumed her teaching career in Syracuse, successively, at Powelson Business Institute, Bryant and Stratton College and Simmons School of Mortuary Science (Simmons Institute of Funeral Service). She was an excellent teacher and felt greatly rewarded by the many students she taught and her fellow faculty members. Anita was a volunteer docent at Everson Museum and a long-time member of Social Arts Club of Syracuse. Anita loved to travel and often pulled Bob along on excursions to Poland, Ireland and across the United States. She was ready with a suitcase and a sense of adventure at the drop of a hat. One event Anita greatly enjoyed was riding on the Zamboni at a University of Michigan vs. Michigan State hockey game at the former Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Anita was an art lover and avid reader. Until just days before her death, she was a faithful follower of the news. She was perpetually concerned about the state of our country and the problems being created at the national level for the futures of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to Bob, Anita was predeceased by her grandson, Sam Fatseas. After Bob’s death, Anita moved to Coburg Village in Rexford, NY. She lived there for more than 11 years. She made wonderful friendships with fellow residents and staff members. It was the ideal setting for her final years. Her children have been delighted to hear many stories of Mom’s interactions at Coburg, most notably how sweet she was. Funeral arrangements will be private. Anita’s remains will be buried alongside Bob’s at Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Syracuse.
