Richard E. Delehanty

Albany, NY-Richard E. Delehanty, 93, died at St. Peter’s Hospital on December 16, 2023. Born October 4, 1930 in Albany, N.Y., he was the son of the late John E. Delehanty Sr. and Marie “Loretta” Balthazar. He was a graduate of Vincentian Institute High School and a lifetime resident of Albany, N.Y. Mr. Delehanty was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany in the 1950’s before transitioning to the Army Reserves. For the majority of his adult life, Mr. Delehanty worked for the United States Postal Service on New Karner Road. After retiring from the postal service, Richard worked part-time for the City of Albany’s Police Department. He married Joan Jones, May 2, 1970 at Vincentian Institute Grotto in Albany. Mr. and Mrs. Delehanty have been longtime members of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Albany where Mr. Delehanty volunteered for several ministries, most notably the food pantry. Mrs. Delehanty survives at home in Albany; also survived by his daughter, Kim Gibson, her husband Brent and his beloved grandson Luke of Albany; one sister-in-law, Jean Allen and her husband George of Sand Lake; two brothers-in-law, James Jones and his wife Diane of Liberty, S.C., and John Jones and his wife Susanna of New Boston, N.H.; his nieces, nephews and their families. Mr. Delehanty was predeceased by his brother, John E. Delehanty Jr.; his sister-in-law Katie Delehanty; his former sister-in-law Beverly Nash and two of his nieces, Janis Lee “Siscy” Delehanty and Mary Jean Riley. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Richard’s family Wednesday, December 20, 2023 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany, NY 12206. His Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 pm. Please enter the funeral home from the rear parking lot entrance only. The Rite of Committal will be held at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery immediately following the Funeral Service.
