Eileen M. Bergin

Albany-Eileen Sharkey Bergin went into eternal rest on Saturday October 3, 2015 at St. Peter’s Hospital surrounded by her family. Eileen was born January 21, 1941. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lila Bryant Sharkey. Eileen’s devoted husband of 48 years, Glyn Richard Bergin predeceased her on October 1, 2009. She was the loving mother of Lila Mae Woodgate, David Bergin, Donna Cassaro, Daniel Bergin and the mother-in-law of Sara Duncan. She was the sister of Joseph Sharkey. Eileen was the cherished grandmother of Eileen and Michael Woodgate, Amanda and John Cassaro, and Patrick and Brendan Duncan Bergin and step-grandmother to Justin Shea. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Robert Bergin, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Eileen graduated from Vincentian Institute in 1958. After graduation she was an operator for the New York Telephone Company. Eileen and Dick were married on April 8, 1961. She and Dick spent the first several years of their marriage living on a U.S. Air Force base in England. While raising her four children, she worked at Wells & Coverly in Stuyvesant Plaza and then at Macy’s Department Store. Eileen was later a supervisor with SUNY System Administration. She retired in 2002. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and friend who loved her family with all her heart. Eileen was the matriarch of the family. She was very social and will be remembered for her great personality, sense of humor and being a great conversationalist. Eileen’s door was always open and she was always extremely welcoming when friends dropped by for a visit—an invitation wasn’t necessary. She loved reading a good book and had certain television programs she enjoyed watching, especially Jeopardy. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Peter’s Hospital’s intensive care unit and the staff at Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital. Funeral services Friday, October 9, 2015 at 8:45 am from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany thence to the Parish of Mater Christi, Albany at 9:30 am where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will immediately follow the Mass at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery.
