Daniel E. Fitzsimmons

Daniel E. Fitzsimmons of Delmar, NY, passed away on January 11th, following a long battle with pneumonia and related complications. He lasted longer than most of his care givers thought possible, and it is no surprise to those who knew his loving and thoughtful nature that his heart kept him going even after his lungs gave out. He is survived by his two sons, Daniel S. (Lori) Fitzsimmons of Delmar and Mark Fitzsimmons of Glenmont; five grandchildren, Jodi (Tim) Cox of Colonie, Joseph of Fairfax, VA, Mark of Arlington, VA, Kelly of Glenmont, and Patrick of Delmar; and one great-grandchild, Carson of Colonie. Dan was born May 9, 1929, in Kingston, NY, the son of Joseph and Louise Fitzsimmons, and grew up in Woodstock. His entire professional life was spent with New York Telephone Company, from his 16-year old start as a lineman, through various managerial and supervisory positions, and eventually as Director of Labor Relations, from which he retired in 1990 – a 45-year career over which he never took a sick day. Following retirement, Dan settled in Venice, Florida, where he shared many happy years with his parents. After relocating back to NY to be closer to his family, he became involved with Senior Hope, a unique senior support program, first on the receiving end of their invaluable services, and subsequently, giving back as a dedicated member of the Senior Hope Board of Directors and various committees and meeting groups. Dan had a passion for history, particularly the Civil War, and also enjoyed fishing and reading, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He truly loved his children and grandchildren, who will forever cherish their memories of him, not only from their time together, but also through the richness of his story telling and the uncanny detail of his recall. He was an intelligent, entertaining, generous, and humble person who will be missed by all who were touched by his engaging personality. He will be especially missed by his loving sons and grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the caring staff of St. Peter’s ICU and the Hospice Inn, who provided comfort and respect to both patient and family. This wonderful community resource was an integral part of Dan’s life, and a gift to them in his memory would please him so. No funeral services are planned, but a memorial celebration of Dan’s life will be held by the family at a later date.
